The prostate is a walnut-sized gland which is located between the bladder and the base of the penis. The tube that takes urine to the urethra passes through the prostate gland which is why the urinary or bladder infections can lead to prostate infections as well.

2. Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
The enlarged prostate is also known as BPH that is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. When this gland gets enlarged then it applies pressure to the urethra thus hampering the flow of urine. It is common in males above 50 years of age. The most common symptoms of BPH are:
- Difficulty urinating
- Urine leakage (incontinence)
- Sudden urge to urinate
- Delay in emptying the bladder
- Nocturia (frequent urination at night)
- Blood in urine
Some diagnostic tests are performed to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment includes
- Medication and lifestyle changes
- If the conservative measures fail, then an outpatient procedure is performed to reduce the size of the enlarged prostate. A needle is inserted inside the urethra and is taken to the prostate and the excess tissue is removed. It will be a painless outpatient procedure.
- The latest technology is the Laser Prostatectomy HOLEP treatment which cuts the excess prostate tissue and relieves the symptoms.
Laser Prostatectomy HoLEP Treatment
HoLEP stands for Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate. In this treatment Procedure
- A laser probe is inserted from the urethra.
- When it reaches the prostate, it shoots a laser beam which cuts the excess tissue away from the prostate thereby relieving the symptoms.
- Another instrument takes out the pieces of this excess tissue which can then used for biopsy as well.
So this HoLEP surgery is the latest and one of the most effective surgeries for enlarged prostate. This ensures less hospitalization time and a faster recovery as well. To know more about this procedure check our FAQs section on this page.
